SLLF is saddened to share the news that New Jersey Lt. Governor, Sheila Oliver has passed away. Before she was the first black woman ever elected to state-wide office in New Jersey, she was the first black woman to ever serve as Speaker of the New Jersey Assembly. It was during her time there that our paths crossed. She served on SLLF’s Board of Directors from 2012-2014. We followed her trailblazing career after her time in the legislature and tapped her to present her story at our Women in Legislative Leadership conference back in 2019, where this photo was taken. Her passion, perseverance and fieryspirit will be truly missed.
