2017 Leading with Civility Conference
After 45 years of presenting programs all over the country and the world, SLLF hosted its first event on home soil, at its new home near Hyannis, Massachusetts. With partners National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) and National Institute for Civil Discourse (NICD), we presented Leading with Civility: Seeking Solutions to Polarization and Incivility in State Legislatures.
A Republican and a Democrat legislative leader travelled to the Cape from each of 12 state legislatures, to talk about the forces affecting civility and cooperation in their statehouses; the barriers to improving civility; and ideas for improving communication and legislative work.
For a day and a half, participants discussed the state of cross-aisle relations in their home state, and left with specific plans to increase trust and cooperation there. They agreed that when lawmakers cannot speak effectively with each other, government slows to a crawl, or even a dead halt.
We are proud to announce that SLLF, along with our partners at National Institute for Civil Discourse and National Foundation for Women Legislators, was named winner of the national 2017 Civvy Award presented by Big TentNation and Bridge Alliance for our work on this program.
