11th Annual Transatlantic Leadership Forum

In early July, 2009, the Transatlantic Leadership Academy (TLA), a subsidiary of SLLF, celebrated 10 years of bringing together European parliamentary leaders and U.S. state legislative leaders to promote increased communication and cooperation among political, business and academic leaders.

The 2009 Transatlantic Forum was held in Bad Ragaz and St. Gallen, Switzerland, and hosted by the chair of TLA, The Honorable Ferdinand Riederer, a member of the St. Gallen Canton Parliament. Twelve legislative leaders from the United States met with parliamentary leaders from nine European countries and several provinces of Canada. They were joined by business leaders from the U.S. and Europe as well as a number of distinguished guests including Ambassador David Wilkins, former U.S. Ambassador to Canada and former Speaker of the House, South Carolina, and Charlie Cook, Editor of The Cook Political Report.

Our program was entitled “Our Health, Ourselves: Lifestyles for Healthy Living” and the setting was perfect – a small village at the foot of the Alps, home of a natural thermal spring and health spa dating back to 1242 (called Bad Pfäfers). Participants stayed at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, a hotel that was originally built in 1868 and soon became one of the most famous health resorts in the world.

Program discussions were held at the Valens Medical Center (Klinik Valens) known internationally as one of Switzerland’s pre-eminent rehabilitation centers, specializing in functional impairments of the locomotor and nervous systems.

In addition to the class discussions focusing on preventative health care and rehabilitative care, a special program was organized in the capital of the Canton of St. Gallen where we met and conferred with members of the St. Gallen Parliament and the Governor.

During this day-long visit to St. Gallen, participants also attended a private organ concert at the magnificent St. Gallen Cathedral and had a guided tour of St. Gallen Abbey, including the world famous Abbey Library, one of the oldest and most beautiful libraries in the world, and which is today part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
