2005 NSC Annual Meeting

Las Vegas, Nevada

Sept. 28 - Oct. 2, 2005
Hosted by Speaker Richard Perkins

The 2005 National Speaker Conference was at times sobering and at times inspiring. There is great value in hearing frightening truths about the state of our world, but being frightened is not helpful unless, once we have been apprised of our situation, there are realistic, practical steps that can be taken to address the real world sources of our fears. This years Conference will be memorable, in part, for the concrete recommendations offered by the guest speakers in our plenary sessions concerning what we can do, at the state level, to confront homeland security, natural disasters, and educational shortcomings and lapses.

The conference began with an opening reception at the MGM Grand Conference Center. The mood of the event was set beautifully by the Las Vegas Academy High School Symphony Strings (9th - 11th grade students), directed by Carol Jackson, who performed an array of timeless classics while participants socialized and dined. SLLF President Steven Lakis and our host, Speaker Richard Perkins, opened the conference with an acknowledgement of hurricane Katrina's devastation of the Gulf Coast and the unfortunate fact that representatives from several effected states could not be with us at the Speakers Conference.

Overall, this years National Speakers Conference provided all participants with an array of realistic potential solutions to several of the most important issues that we face today. Though issues of security, education, and energy may seem intractable and overwhelming at first, there is hope. But the burden is on our leaders - especially state leaders - to take the wise actions needed to make progress and find solutions.
