We at the SLLF send a heartfelt “thank you” to the Honorable Terry Spence, Speaker of the Delaware House of Representatives, and the gracious, helpful, and fun staff and volunteers who made this year’s Annual Meeting yet another smashing success.

The main theme of the plenary sessions was to account for why the business climate in Delaware is so attractive. Approximately 60% of Fortune 500 companies have incorporated in the state.

Chief Justice Myron Steele was the speaker in the first plenary session. He spoke on the efficiency and effectiveness of Delaware’s judiciary. His main point is that by providing a consistent and coherent set of precedent and a streamlined legal process, businesses can expect speedy resolutions to litigation, saving time and money.

Approaching the popularity of Delaware as a place to do business from another direction, Jerry Daniel and Bill Reif of CT Corporation explained in another session how businesses become incorporated in Delaware and the various “secrets” that make Delaware attractive to business and economic development.­

We were also entertained by the always entertaining and informative Charlie Cook, of the Cook Political Report, who prognosticated on the coming 2008 Presidential elections. His insights into the positives and negatives of all the main contenders is a welcome primer in this lengthy campaign.

As in past years, however, perhaps the most important part of the Annual meeting is the opportunity for Speakers, Chiefs of Staff, and members of the business community to share ideas and experiences. The Speakers Only session and the Chiefs of Staff Only session provide a unique forum for officials to speak candidly about their jobs and share what has and has not worked in their home states.
