2009 New Speakers Program

January 15 - 18, 2009 

The newest state legislative leaders from across the nation will come together to attend the New Speakers Program at the University of Tennessee, Jan. 15-18, 2009.

The SLLF is chaired by the Honorable Lois M. DeBerry of Tennessee, Tennessee House Speaker Pro Tempore. The UT Institute for Public Service and the soon-to-be announced Jimmy Naifeh Center for Effective Leadership will host the program. The program will be the inaugural event for the Naifeh Center at UT, which is being created to help prepare elected and appointed officials for the challenges of serving the public. The Center will provide the best leadership and management education for government officials across the country and the Southeast region.

The New Speakers Program, a part of the National Speakers Conference held every two years, is intended to provide leadership development education to newly elected speakers of state houses. Approximately 20 speakers will participate from across the U.S. depending on the outcome of the elections.

Program topics will be presented in a nonpartisan manner in order to help draw attention to leadership in a collaborative way. Areas covered may include Trust, Leadership Challenges, Ethics, Cooperation and Consensus Building, and Statesmanship. Faculty from the University of Tennessee, and experts from other institutions, will lead the sessions.
