The Program for Emerging Political Leaders

"This program should be required for anyone who desires
to be an effective leader"  - Sen. Catherine  Pugh, MD

Preparing the Next Generation of Leadership in America
For three days, more than 50 of these future leaders convene for a series of highly interactive and often provocative discussions led by a distinguished University of Virginia, Darden School faculty member. These legislators are given numerous opportunities to measure their expertise and knowledge against some of the most successful political and business leaders in the nation.

Complementing the classroom discussions, there are special breakout sessions for the “students” at Sponsors Hall. In the evening there are several notable cultural events including a reception and dinner at the famed UVA Rotunda.

This program is made possible through the support of a select group of leading businesses beginning with a major grant from UST, Inc and supporting grants from Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, Altria Corporate Services, Ameriprise Financial, Comcast, General Electric, Golden Living, IMS Health, and Intuit.

Nomination Process
Each year, the Senate President, Speaker of the House, and Minority Leader from each of the 50 state legislatures, are invited to nominate up to three members whom they judge to be the “best and the brightest” in their chambers. Men and women who by their every day actions, display those qualities—integrity, intelligence, common sense, dedication to the institution they serve and the willingness to work across party lines for the benefit of the people—that we commonly identify with our finest legislative leaders. The nomination process for the 2008 program have been closed.

Application Process
Each of the nominees are then asked to fill out a short application which is reviewed by a selection committee.  Those selected to participate receive a scholarship that covers tuition, lodging, and meals during the program as well as a travel allowance to and from Charlottesville.
