The Emerging Leaders Program
The Emerging Leaders Program has been designed for those men and women who are judged by their peers to be likely future leaders in their state. For three days, more than 50 of these potential leaders convene for a series of intense interactive and often provocative discussions led by a distinguished University of Virginia, Darden School faculty member. These legislators are given numerous opportunities to measure their expertise and knowledge against some of the most successful political and business leaders in the nation.

Complementing the classroom discussions, there are special breakout sessions for the “students” at Sponsors Hall. In the evening there are several notable cultural events including a reception and dinner at the famed UVA Rotunda.

This program is made possible through the support of a select group of leading businesses with a major grant from Altria Client Services and supporting grants from Comcast, Darden Restaurants, GlaxoSmithKline, Golden LivingIMS HealthNC Reynolds American, and Walmart.

Nomination Process
Each year, the Senate President, Speaker of the House, and Minority Leader from each of the 50 state legislatures, are invited to nominate up to three members whom they judge to be the “best and the brightest” in their chambers. Men and women who by their every day actions, display those qualities—integrity, intelligence, common sense, dedication to the institution they serve and the willingness to work across party lines for the benefit of the people—that we commonly identify with our finest legislative leaders. We are now accepting nominations for the 2010 program.

Application Process
Each of the nominees are then asked to fill out a short application which is reviewed by a selection committee. Those selected to participate receive a scholarship that covers tuition, lodging, and meals during the program as well as a travel allowance to and from Charlottesville.
